EARTH WARMING
Filippo Giorgi, head of ICTP's Physics of Weather and Climate Group, was one of about 40 scientists who participated in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Plenary Meeting of Working Group I. Some 250 delegates from more than 100 countries also attended the meeting, which took place in Shanghai, China, between 17-20 January. Representatives from United Nations member states accepted the IPCC Working Group's 1000-page assessment report detailing the current state of scientific knowledge concerning global warming. Delegates also approved a 10-page summary for policy makers, which will be used as a reference in negotiations on global climate change policies. Giorgi served as a co-ordinating lead author for the chapter of the report examining the regional impacts of climate change. In a statement that captured global media attention, the report concluded that "there is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities."
