BEAMS FOR REAL?
Do you remember the teleportation scenes in Star Trek movies-people and objects moving instantaneously through time and space? Science fiction, not fact, of course. Yet, recent experiments both in Europe and the United States have proved that some physical properties, conforming to the laws of quantum mechanics, can be transferred from one photon of light to another. Between 1 and 5 March, several scientists who took part in these "teleportation" tests-including Francesco de Martini of the University of Rome, Anton Zeilinger of Vienna University and Charles H. Bennett of IBM-will participate in ICTP's Third Adriatico Research Conference on Quantum Interferometry. The conference will focus on such exotic themes as quantum nonlocality, quantum computation, and quantum entropy; Bose-Einstein atom condensation; entanglement; and, yes, teleportation.
