IAEA'S 40
th BIRTHDAY
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The IAEA served as the ICTP's lead administrative agency from the Centre's inception in October 1964 until January 1996, when the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) assumed primary oversight responsibilities. The IAEA plans to commemorate its anniversary at its 41st General Conference to be held between 29 September and 3 October. The conference will also mark the farewell of Hans Blix who has served as the IAEA's Director General for the past 16 years. He will be replaced by Mohamed ElBaradei of Egypt, who has held a number of high-level positions at the Agency since 1984.
