Alfred Kastler (1902 - 1984) old
><p>Born in Guebwiller, he taught physics at lycées in Mulhouse, Colmar and Bordeaux, before leaving to join the University of Bordeaux in 1931, where he later became Professor of Physics. He moved to the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1941 where he led a research group in Hertzian spectroscopy, becoming professor in 1952.<p>
Alfred Kastler was awarded the Nobel Prize (1966) for "the discovery and development of optical methods for studying Hertzian resonances in atom"
He not only provided a stimulus to further research by other scientists, but his work also resulted in practical applications, namely the developments of the lasers, magnetometers and atomic clocks.
Professor Kastler was Chairman at the ICTP Scientific Council from 1971 to 1982
