FLASHBACK

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of ICTP, Highlights periodically includes a description of a seminal event in the Centre's history: 18 June 1964 -- A gala ceremony marks the laying of the foundation stone for ICTP's Main Building. Among the dignitaries attending the event are Sigvard Eklund, Director General of the Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Carlo Arnaudi, Italy's Minister of Scientific Research, and Mario Franzil, Mayor of Trieste. ICTP's founding fathers, Abdus Salam and Paolo Budinich, are also in attendance. The cornerstone consists of a sealed concrete box with the following inscription, written in English and Latin: "Today...on the fourth centenary of Galileo's birth, the foundation stone of this university building has been laid. It is offered by Trieste to the International Centre of (sic) Theoretical Physics established by the unanimous decision of the International Atomic Energy (sic), for the scientific cooperation of men." A photo of the inscription is on display in the ICTP Library.
